Day 1 (Seward)
We leave the the cruise ship Summit at the unhealthy time around 06:50 hrs to board the coach to
meet the team, our fellow travellers, gather information about the tour and then set off for a trip of less than two miles!
First stop was the harbour where we boarded a
much smaller boat to spend some 3+ hours cruising Resurrection Bay exploring the cliffs and coves, watching birds and sealife and taking in the stunning
views of mountains and glaciers on a lovely sunny and warm morning. The captain of the boat provided interesting and informative commentary with good local knowledge
acquired over many years working in that part of the world.
Although there were no whale sightings, we did get to see some of the more unusual birds, bald headed eagles, sea lions lazing over the rocks
soaking up the sunshine, a playful and photogenic sea otter and a school of dolphins at close quarters with their young learning from the parents to swim in formation.
After the bracing winds blowing out the cobwebs from my head given the early start, it was time for lunch! The afternoon was then spent at the
nearby Alaska Sealife Centre to learn a little of the work carried out there.
The rest of the day was spent sampling the Alaskan beers and getting tucked into some excellent Hallibut at the nearby Resurrection Roadhouse
located next to the Seward Windsong Lodge!
